Many factors: A thyroid u/s may be done by a radiologist, an endocrinologist, a thyroid surgeon, or others. It is best done by someone who also does needle biopsy, if necessary. The u/s will detect nodules, vascularity, cysts, texture, and other features which can suggest a higher cancer risk. The u/s tells the doctor about structure (what it looks like). It says nothing about whether it is hyperactive.
