I recently had some blood work done and was told i'm at increased risk for gout. my uric acid level was at 9.3 mg/dl. i'm in my early twenties. what lifestyle changes do i need to make?

You should: eat less protein , avoid alcohol , drink plenty of fluids , do not get dehydrated . Is a serious metabolic disorder often ignored , uric acid may get deposited on vital structures like eye , heart , kidneys etc leading to serious consequences , speak to your doctor if you need medications to keep the levels down.

Get the Gout Out.: The first thing that I would do is have a repeat uric acid level done. You seem a little young to fit the profile for gout. Having said that, the uric acid level can not be relied upon to answer the question of gout. That is done by analysis of joint fluid. The reasons for an elevated uric acid are many and since the consequences of can be serious, you really need to be evaluated by a specialist.

I'd just watch it: Most guys with uric acid in this range never get clinical gout. If you drink much alcohol, cut back. Eating huge amounts of organ meat presents a theoretical risk. That's really about it. If your big toe died get super sore all of a sudden, we can manage it.

You have gout!: With a uric acid level of 9.3 mg/dl not only are you at increased risk for gout...YOU HAVE IT! You need to , avoid beer and grain liquors, red meat, lamb and pork, organ meats, such as liver, kidneys and sweetbreads, seafood, especially shellfish, like shrimp, lobster, mussels, anchovies and sardines. A quick internet search will tell you much more.

I would recommend: taking the medication to lower the uric acid. it is very difficult to change the lifestyle and have it work. Alternatively, look online for lists of foods you would have to avoid and try it for 3 months -6 months to see if the levels got any better.
