No set value: Gout should not be diagnosed with a uric acid level. Gout should be diagnosed by aspirating fluid from a flaring joint and sent to lab to look for crystals. Patients can have a uric acid as high as 10 and still not have any gout attacks while some may have a s low as 7 and still get attacks. That said though, the higher the uric acid, the more likely one will develop gout.

Highlevel predispose: Gout can occur where serum uric acid levels are as low as 6 mg/dl but an individual can have serum values as high as 9.6 mg/dl and not have gout. Depending on the lab normal range any level above 8 mg/dl is called hyperurecemia. The higher the level of uric acid the more likely you are to experience a gout attack but not necessarily.
