Dental pain: It makes no sense to take antibiotics if there is no infection. Cannot comment on the cause of the pain without further info but either the dentist should have discussed this with you or perhaps you need to get a second opinion. Good luck.

Radiographs: Radiographs are but one tool that your dentist has to determine what might be wrong with that painful tooth. Does it have a deep filling or a crown or a root canal? More importantly does it test vital or non-vital? Without this info, so hard to determine what's amiss. Sounds like you need root canal therapy. Antibiotics are questionable in this circumstance. See an endodontist to be sure.
