May need root canal: If the crown was too high and hit before the other teeth when you bite, it can become very painful from the trauma but adjusting the bite usually helps. Sometime the trauma of shaping the tooth for a crown puts a tooth over the edge and it dies and abcesses and needs a root canal. An xray may not show the signs for months since all we can see is changes in the bone and that takes a while.

Infection: If the nerve of the tooth is infected, you most certainly need root canal therapy. Necrotic teeth will not heal on their own.
