Increase protein: Many vegetarians and vegans that i know replace meat with starches. It is still important to include a good source of protein into your diet. Don't replace you protein calories with additional carbs. Also cutting out all sources of sugar will help tremendously. This is not easy. Many processed foods contain added sugars.
