Caries/gum disease: Molars can be lost from 3 main factors. 1) cavities: this includes untreated cavities and also teeth that have been treated and now the teeth are failing or a failing root canal. 2) periodontal disease: gum disease that has destroyed enough bone that the teeth have to be removed. 3) the bite: the way your teeth fit together are crucial. Other causes: not going to the dentist and poor home care.

Access: People tend to keep their front teeth cleaner as it is easier for them to see them and have easier access for brushing and flossing. Conversely, the back teeth are harder to get to to clean. Further, the back teeth are larger and wider with more of an area to keep clean between them where more cavities tend to develop. Finally some people don't mind losing a back tooth, but missing a front tooth?
