Inflammation of the gingiva is usually caused by bacteria. The bacteria can be from decay around the crowns or from hardened calculus stuck on the root surfaces. Depending on your overbite, the lower teeth may also be traumatizing the tissue. The only way to know for sure is to visit a local dentist.

Inflammation, or swelling of the gum usually causes the gum to be irritated especially during function. You may have a deep bite or protrusive interference which causes fremitus to the cental incisors and therefore induced gingival inflammation in the area of central incisors. Anterior occlusal adjustment which relieves the malocclusion in the area will greatly reduce the symptoms.
