Depends: There are many types of brackets called braces for orthodontia. There is the basic twin brace that has a rectangular slot for the wire and 4 tie wings to secure the wire to it. There are many modifications to this type. I use self-ligating braces which are brackets that hold the wire and a sliding gate opens and closes to hold or allow change of wires. Many different minor differences exist.

Braces Parts: That is a complicated question! correction of malocclusion is treated in many different ways. The metal glued to the teeth are called brackets. The wire that goes in between the brackets are called arch wires. There are hooks, springs, elastics, that can be used in treatment. Some patients require retainers or bite plates during treatment. Invisalign utilizes aligners.

Parts of braces: Basic parts: brackets are glued to the teeth and act as handles. Bands are glued to back teeth and used as handles. Wires are ligated to the "handles" to provide force to move teeth. Elastics are used to align bites upper to lower. Orthopedic appliances are used to enhance growth of the face and jaws.
