A space : Between teeth is called a diastema. Hope this helps.

Spacers: There are small rubber ligatures placed in between your molars to create space for the bands to anchor the braces.

Depends: It is unclear what mechanisms your orthodontist plans to employ for your treatment-- as providers we have many tools and methods of fixing teeth at our disposal. Closing gaps can be done a number of ways, but would still be called 'orthodontic treatment'. I would discuss with your doctor the different approaches they could have employed and why they are choosing the direction they are.

Don't understand: Usually an orthodontic specialist will close spaces by moving teeth. Sometimes there's problematic gum tissue that needs to be reshaped, and that would be done by periodontist or a oral surgeon. Please provide more information.

A 31-year-old member asked:

Will the orthodontist stop you from having braces by the colour of your teeth?

Not a color issue: It is not likely that an orthodontist would have all that much concern about the color of your teeth as much as the issues of their basic health status such as periodontal disease or decay. Ortho is mostly concerned about correcting mis aligned teeth and correcting bite problems.
