Spacers: There are small rubber ligatures placed in between your molars to create space for the bands to anchor the braces.

Depends: It is unclear what mechanisms your orthodontist plans to employ for your treatment-- as providers we have many tools and methods of fixing teeth at our disposal. Closing gaps can be done a number of ways, but would still be called 'orthodontic treatment'. I would discuss with your doctor the different approaches they could have employed and why they are choosing the direction they are.

Don't understand: Usually an orthodontic specialist will close spaces by moving teeth. Sometimes there's problematic gum tissue that needs to be reshaped, and that would be done by periodontist or a oral surgeon. Please provide more information.
