Wire after braces: It is called a retainer. It is bonded to the teeth to keep them from moving after the braces are removed.

Fixed retainer: Retainers after braces can be fixed or removable or a combination. Typically they are worn for two years after braces but it is not unusual to have to wear them forever is some case. Most commonly a 3 x 3 fixed retainer is cemented behind the lower front six teeth as they are the teeth most likely to relapse or become crooked again once the braces are removed.
