Prepare for fun: Removal is easy, no preparation is needed. If you have cleaned well during treatment, you do not have to worry about discoloration or cavities. Retainers come in different styles. In my office it is very easy, a mould of your teeth is taken and a "invisalign" like retainer is made for the next day. Sometimes we bond a lower inside wire. No worry is needed. Congratulations!

Yes: You will almost definitely need to have a retainer! if you did a good job of keeping your teeth clean during the treatment there should be no discoloration of the teeth. Immediately when the braces are removed your teeth may feel a bit "slimy". This goes away fairly quickly.

Congratulations!: There will be no permanent discoloration if you took good care of your teeth while in braces. Your teeth will feel "slimy" and you will notice your gum tissue more, but that feeling goes away quickly. Follow your orthodontist's retention instructions so that you may keep your beautiful smile and functional bite for the rest of your life. Congratulations!

Retainers: You will need retainers when braces are removed. Braces do not discolor teeth...Poor oral hygiene can discolor the part of the tooth that is next to the braces. Know that off is much easier than on.

Soreness: An hour before your appointment for braces removal, it may be advisable to take an over-the-counter analgesic (like Motrin or advil) as the process may be somewhat uncomfortable. As for your other questions, they are best answered by your orthodontist as they are specific to your particular situation. You will have retainers - they type will be determined by the orthodontist.
