Yes: Besides protecting the surrounding structures around the dentition (e.g. Periodontal tissues), the teeth can protect and support each other during function if there is a good contact relationship between them.

Sounds reasonable: You should have nice firm contact with the adjacent teeth, and the crown should feel comfortable. Sounds like there is room for improvement with replacement.

Yes: Please have your dentist take a look. If there is food impaction into the gum, you can end up with gum and bone loss between the teeth.
