For your health: If teeth are not salvageable, extraction is the only option. If teeth are extracted, it's possible for adjacent teeth to tip or drift into the newly created space of the extraction. Assuming you mean "space maintainer" they are often used to keep the dental arch intact until definitive tooth replacement is possible.

Prevent drifting: A tooth may need to be removed due to decay, infection, or gum disease. The remaining teeth will move and tilt into the now vacant space, causing more complex problems with your bite that can contribute to further destruction of your teeth. A space maintainer will keep your remaining teeth in proper alignment.

Space: This will create space to properly move the teeth into. Ask your Orthodontist about the Damon System before you get extractions. Often do not need them with this system.good luck

If a primary tooth: a space maintainer may be recommended to save the space. They are removed when the new permanent tooth erupts.
