In the right hands: Yes fat can be used to augment the lips. However, fat does not tend to last very long in the lips as compared to when it is transferred to other areas of the body. I suspect that this is because fat is not naturally found in the lips. So when it is placed there, it does not take well. Other fillers can be considered such as hyaloronic acid -- ie: juvederm or restylane (dermal fillers).

Yes: But if you gain a significant amount of weight, the fat grafts will enlarge - so try to keep your weight stable.

Fat Grafting: Yes, fat grafting can be done to the lips. It is a safe and effective procedure. Fat grafting to the lips is more permanent, but cosmetic fillers are more temporary.

Safe, but consider..: It is safe, though all surgery comes with risks. Even though I am a huge fan of fat transfer procedures, I am not quick to recommend it for lip augmentation because fat grafts do not tend to survive as well in the lips since you will still need to eat and talk. It is nearly impossible to keep the lips 'closed' for 2 weeks. Consult with a board certified plastic surgeon to determine what's best!
