Persistent fluid: It is not unusual to have persistent fluid in the middle ear after suffering an ear infection despite appropriate antibiotic treatment. It may take a number of weeks for the fluid to completely resolve. For most adults, it can take up to a month. If fluid remains persistent for over a month, the fluid should be removed, which is most commonly done with a small incision in the eardrum.
