Not drugs alone: A good treatment regime for ptsd would not stop at drugs alone -- it would include various types of psychotherapy and other practices as well. http://www.ptsd.va.gov/public/pages/coping-traumatic-stress.asp depending on the person, type of anxiety, and other medications he's on, ssri antidepressants might be tried. For nightmares, the antihypertensive drug prazosin might help.

Depends: Depends on duration of symptoms. Cognitive therapy is a useful treatment in many cases. Selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors help in some cases, e.g. Paroxetine. Other meds sometimes used are amitriptyline, mirtazapine, and olanzapine. See http://goo.Gl/md72j.

Individually tailor: There is no one size fits all psychotropic medication approach for ptsd. Each patient is individual in terms of how effective particular medications are, their side effect profile and the types of symptoms that they present with. For severe, complex ptsd it may be a slow process to completely optimize medications - but it is worth it to the patient.
