Yes: Usually a custom made mouthguard from a dentist or an orthodontist is just as good. The otc store bought or internet purchased mouthguards are inadequate, including the boil and bite, etc. Mouthguards vary based on the purpose, person's age and the dentition. Yes: A mouth guard is there to simply protect your mouth. There are many types and ways they are made, but you can get them from either and it will be more than fine.

What kind?: I think, as an Orthodontist, that General Dentists do a slightly better job fabricating Athletic Mouth Guards. I think Orthodontic Specialists do a better job with Orthodontic Retainers. I think thy both do equally well fitting and adjusting an Occlusal Orthotic for TMJ pain relief. But know that the difference is statistically extremely small.
