A member asked:

I was wondering, do dentist/orthodontist do any work with invisalign?

Yes: The dental professional does in fact work with the manufacturer of the clear aligner tray systems. However, they do not manufacture the trays. They are involved with monitoring tooth movement, making mid treatment adjustments, placing tooth attachments, and altering the trays as needed.

Orthodontists do: in truth, both do, but having a dentist do orthodontics is a bit like having your general internist perform heart surgery on you! Invisalign is a treatment method for orthodontics and as such should only be handled by an orthodontist who has had 2-3 more years of training than a dentist in orthodontic procedures.

Yes, with caveat: 2 cautions. 1) Studies show Orthodontists do a better job correcting malocclusions, and do it in less time, and 2) clear correctors are about half as effective as fixed braces (the gold standard), which means greater post-treatment instability (relapse). Please see an fully qualified Orthodontic Specialist as opposed to a GP who only does this part time.
