A member asked:

Why would er doctor encorage sis to sign dnr as the 'compassionate' thing to do for 92 yo mother?

Depends: Not based on age, but based on quality of life; if doc felt the woman would either not survive CPR or maintain quality of life if she was resuscitated. Dnr should not be based on age only.

DNR is compassionate: Because resuscitation efforts cause severe physical and emotional pain and suffering even in a patient with relatively healthy and young body, in the elderly it causes bony and underlying organ injury very easily, with severely attenuated chances of meaningful survival and possibility of hospital discharge secondary to additional comorbidities in the old age.
