It wins the battle: Exercising will burn some additional calories, compared to sitting around. However, if you don't learn portion control & modify your diet to eat better, it is unlikely any program you try will succeed. That piece of pie you reward yourself with because you "exercised" was worth an hour + on the treadmill.
