Be cautious: Patients with true clinical depression or anxiety tend to have significant symptoms that cannot easily be relieved without medication, therapy, or both. Some patients may not find relief from their symptoms even with available treatments. Symptoms of anxiety and depression tend to worsen over time without treatment. Alternative therapies could be tried for mild symptoms, but proceed cautiously.

Often yes: Almost everyone suffering anxiety and/or depression tries to relieve it first without professional help. Many succeed. Exercise, good nutrition, self-help books, relaxation training, ; many other approaches can help. However, if these aren't enough, it is time to seek professional assistance, which will often include meds and/or therapy.

Remember Neuromod: "Neuromodulation" or "brain stimulation" can be an alternative for therapy and meds. The FDA has approved transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) as a treatment for depression, and research publications suggest TMS can help with anxiety disorders. Side effects tend to be confined to the head area (vs molecules that go throughout the body). Evidence base for TMS is impressive and growing.
