A member asked:

When caused by h. pylori, does h. pylori remain once you reach the gastric cancer stage? and if so, can we do a ubt test to detect it?

Yes: H. pylori- induced gastric cancer tends to co-exist. You can still check for it with the UBT as long as you are not on any acid suppression therapy or antibiotics for at least 2 weeks. Treating it at this point may not be of any use however.

Sometimes.: H. pylori can cause certain gastric cancers, and a type of lymphoma found in the stomach (MALT lymphoma). It can also decrease the risk for certain cancers. Treating H. pylori is important and recommended if you have a type of cancer associated with it. And yes, a urea breath test (UBT) is the way to test for it.
