Treating esophagitis: Esophagitis should be treated with a medication known as a proton-pump-inhibitor (PPI), available by prescription. A few PPIs are now available over-the-counter. How long it takes to heal varies, but it is curable. Healing can be monitored with upper endoscopy (a doctor looking inside esophagus through a long tube), after 6-12 months of treatment. Not treating esophagitis can be dangerous.
