Inflammation: EE is an inflammatory condition of the esophagus that is caused by eosinophils, a type of blood cell often associated with allergies. Treatment can be surgical (dilation or stretching of narrowed sections) or medical with steroids (budesonide or fluticasone) and/or proton pump inhibitors (PPI medicines ending with -prazole suffix). Steroids can treat the disease while PPIs can control symptoms.
