Blood work: Blood work for uric acid level is the most common. A joint aspiration could also be done with sending the material to the lab to see if crystals exist.

Uric acid levels: Uric acid blood levels will help assess if you have gout. Other definitive tests include tapping the joint to aspirate joint fluid for evaluation. Kidney function test is also necessary to assess health and efficiency of your kidneys.

The history and physical examination alert the doctor to the possibility of gout. Joints can be aspirated and the fluid tested. Otherwise, blood tests, especially for uric acid, are helpful in diagnosing gout. X-rays are useful.
