Depends: If you are not on birth control, you get a follicle cyst every month. Non ovulatory cysts just happen, and we don't know what causes them.

Pain in the pelvis: Ovarian cysts , many are found during an ultrasound exam, that are asymptomatic and benign. Pelvic pain, pain on intercourse, pelvic distension / fullness, should be worked up by your primary care / and- or gyn.

Yes: Some ovarian cysts are quite large, like the size of a grapefruit. Others are very small and they can be any size in between.

Depends on factors: A simple cyst is very common and often detected on routine pelvic or ultrasound exam and might disappear by the next exam. The more complex ones need further evaluation so doctors can determine the significance of cysts based their size, structure, timing with regard to period and to menopause, etc. Because not all cysts are normal, i'll share this with specialists in onc for their perspective..

Very common in women who still have periods. The ovaries' job is to make cysts...that is where the "egg" lives. Small simple cysts are of no concerns. Larger (>5CM), complex, or if you are post menopausal, may be of greater concern. Birth control pills can help suppress ovarian cysts.

Depends on factors: A simple cyst is very common and often detected on routine pelvic or ultrasound exam and can be followed by gyn visits. The more complex ones need further evaluation so doctors can determine the significance of cysts based their size, structure, timing with regard to period and to menopause, etc. Sometimes surgery is needed. I will share this with subspecialists in gyn for additional input.
A 46-year-old member asked:

What are my chances of having ovarian cysts pop?

Unlikely: Most ovarian cysts resolve on their own or with treatment. Occasionally, they leak the cyst fluid within (ruptured cyst) or twist (ovarian torsion). When that happens there is usually some degree of pain.
