RICE treatment: Rest, ice, compression and elevation when possible are recommended for sprains. Rest means just taking it easy to avoid reinjury. Ice packs for 15 minutes several times a day can help with pain and swelling. Elevation when possible also helps with swelling. Elastic wrap for compression can provide stability and help with swelling.

RICE: For a sprained ankle - remember RICE: rest, ice, compression (ace bandage) and elevation. So - stay off the ankle if you can for a few days, apply ice 15 minutes at a time 3-4 times a day, put an ace bandage not too right and keep elevated when not walking. This will all help to reduce swelling. Adding some Advil (ibuprofen) if safe for you to do so is also appropriate. If not better in a fee days see Dr!

Ankle sprain: Did you ice or wrap it for support? Depending on the severity of your ankle sprain you may just need NSAIDs(ibuprofen ,naproxen) and support. If it is still swollen icing and elevation may help. If you are still having pain and swelling with walking follow up with your doctor is recommended to rule out a fracture(broken bone).

Take a look: Here is the protocol we use in our office for sprains: http://www.massgeneral.org/ortho/services/sports/rehab/Ankle%20sprain%20rehab.pdf. All exercises can be readily done at home. Remember if you have significant pain or swelling I would encourage you to seek an inperson evaluation to make sure you don't have more concerning ankle instability(sometimes requires a walking boot) or fracture.
