Ankles: I will assume you were evaluated to ensure there are no fractures. Use rice to start - rest , ice compression and elevation. When it doesn't hurt to move, start with making the alphabet with ankle motion. Once walking isn't painful you can progress to gentle toe raises, then work on a wobble board for proprioception and strength. Use a compression wrap during this time to prevent edema.

Sprained ankle: For sprained ankles, rice is usually the first step toward rehab. Resting is obviously important but probably the hardest to do, icing around the area, compression with comfortable ace-bandage, and elevation. Taking antiinflammatory medication can be helpful the first few weeks after to help decrease pain and swelling. Also, getting over counter ankle bracing may help for more moderate sprains.
