A member asked:

I've have upper back & sternum pain for 3 year & doctors say costochondritis. is it possible for it too last this long or could it be more severe?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Costochondritis: This is an inflammation of a joint between the breast bone and a rib causing pain and tenderness. If the nerve running between 2 ribs is also pinched, sharp shooting pains could radiate around to the side and back of the rib cage. Antiinflammatories (by mouth) and corticosteroids(injected into the inflamed joint) may relieve the chronic pain and tenderness. Consult a rheumatologist orchest surgeon
