A member asked:

I went to er 4 days ago, all tests normal including ekg. suspected stomach/hernia or costochondritis issues. i can feel muscular pain in sternum and back. what does quick pain in the middle of chest mean? i was dozing off and it lasted half a second?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

sharp, fleeting pain in the chest or upper back, especially if provoked by a deep breath or certain motions, is often caused by a pinched intercostal nerve or muscle that runs between 2 ribs. Your episode occurred while quiet though. Nevertheless that pain was so fleeting, didn't recur& I feel it was not a serious issue. Costochondritis has pinpoint tenderness at rib-sternum junction. ?See MD again
