Referral: In general, the sooner a child receives recommended therapies, the better the child's long term outcome. Many children have a "delay" in any of the 4 developmental areas - fine motor, gross motor, speech, personal-social. As pediatricians, we screen for developmental milestones so that we can recommended therapies for those children that need it. Keep the appointments!

ADHD and Specific : Learning disabilities co-occur in 30-35% of cases. Receptive &expressive language delays early on ("specific language impairment" if persistent to ~age 6) greatly increase risk of language-based learning disabilities in school. 90% of reading disorder cases stem from the brain's inability to process phonemes, the smallest units of sound in a language.
