Implants: Each of these specialists can place implants. Choose the one that you trust and feel most comfortable with.

Good question: I don't have a prosthodontist in my area but i would expect one to have the best options on restoring the implant. If the implant is in the anterior or esthetics is of paramount concern i refer to a periodontist who will fine tune the gum tissue for the most natural look. If the patient has health issues or the implant surgery has a potential for complications i refer to an oral surgeon.

Go with the expert!: While these dental professionals can legally place dental implants with the correct training, I would inquire about the experience of each. Maxillofacial surgeons must complete a minimum of 4 years hospital based surgical training after dental school, which better prepares them for any related complications.

Only 2 questions: Selecting the right dental implant dentist can make the difference between a success vs failure. Any dentist with a dental degree can legally place an implant. The only 2 questions to ask: 1. Is your implant dentist a board certified specialist? 2. How long has your dentist been placing dental implants?

Prosthodontist: The Prosthodontist must be the team captain, as the final restoration will be done by him/her. The restoration will be reverse engineered and the placement of the implants so directed. If the Prosthodontist does not place implants, then work with him/her to choose the right surgeon for your needs. Both O.M.S. and Periodontist are trained to do this. Check all credentials / experience. Good Luck.
