A member asked:

Will a doctor give a patient a sedative and do a prostate biopsy while the patient is asleep?

They may: Most often prostate biopsies are done in the office under a local anesthetic using a prosthetic block. They can certainly administer sedation using valium 10 mg 1 to 2 tablets at the discretion of the physician and desire of the patient. Prostate biopsies can be done under general anesthesia but you want the right equipment for the job. Stereotactic perineal biopsies are performed under anesthesia.
