Ortho or surgery: "overbite" usually means the upper teeth are too far in front of the lower teeth. Braces for mild-moderate discrepancy - jaw surgery for bigger discrepancies.

2 types: Horizontal overbite is known as over jet in dentist-speak, and anything more than 2mm means front teeth not working properly. Vertical overbite, where overlay is greater than 50%, also means front teeth not working properly. Often when front teeth don't meet properly, jaws and/or back teeth also out of whack. See a qualified orthodontic specialist for an opinion.

Some is normal !: Some amount of overbite is normal. Your upper teeth are supposed to cover part of your lower teeth. Normal overbite can range from about 20%-75% depending on how the rest of the bite is set up. If you do not grind your teeth or have jaw joint (TMJ) pain, then most likely your amount of overbite is fine for you. Ask your dentist what they think at your next visit, but i wouldn't be overly concerned.
