Great question but difficult to answer. You are approaching the end of your growth phase so there may not be much more change in your growth. Your orthodontist has years of training in approaching these issues with the correct course of care. Follow their advice, ask them questions, feel comfortable with their experience and care, and leave it up to them.

Questions best answered by an Orthodontist-Oral Surgeon team after full diagnostic evaluation. At 17 well over 90% of growth is completed for most males. Decision as to whether surgery is required as a skeletal, not a dental, decision. Jaws have to be properly related to each other for teeth to be made to match. A 10-12mm horizontal overbite (overjet) indicate need for surgery.
