Bad idea: Once you "form" the mouth guard, every time you bite into it you drive your teeth right back into the shape in the mouthguard's memory. In other words, they prevent correction of your malocclusion. Any orthodontic specialist would be happy to provide you with an orthodontic mouthguard that will allow malocclusion correction while at the same time protecting teeth and tissues.

DON'T USE: Never use 'boil and bite' mouth guards when braces are on the teeth. The moldable mouthguard can lock into the nooks/crannies of the braces and under/over the wires and then cannot be removed. Speak to your orthodontist to find out what type of mouth guard can be used with braces.

Same as without: whether you have the braces on or not, these work by heating the material, biting, then letting it cool. issue with braces is that overtime, teeth move and the mouth guard will not fit. We give our athletes patients special ortho mouth guards that are not boil and bite. I would discuss with your orthodontist-- we give them free as they cost a lot less than boil and bite
