Whey allergy: It is not unheard of to have allergic reactions to whey protein shakes. This could include hives, angioedema or even anaphylaxis. It is conceivable that patient could have signs of lactose intolerance due to the milk proteins as well.

Occ.mild side effect: Whey protein is generally well-tolerated but some people are allergic to whey, in which case it could cause headaches, joint pain, fatigue etc. More common is lactose intolerance which causes bloating, diarrhea etc. Whey isolate has little lactose compared to whey concentrate. High protein should be avoided in those with kidney disease. See http://bit.Ly/jcpexf see comment for more advice:.

Controversial: There is much debate about whey protein, derived from dairy, regarding its effects on health. I don't believe one should get protein from dairy and prefer non-animal sources like quinoa, nuts and beans. I also like wild salmon for protein and mostly healthy fats. Books like the china study demonize whey and claim it causes cancer and autoimmune disease. No one knows for sure so use other sources.
