A member asked:

I was wondering is it normal to have pulsating pain 1 day after root canal?

Not unusual: There may be some pressure in the bone at the apex of the tooth. As your heart beats, the blood flow squeezes through the inflammation and causes the discomfort. Call your dentist if the pain meds are not helping.

It is normal: During the root canal therapy and crown preparation a lot of collateral tissue (gums, nerves, muscles) damage is done. The pain is a symptom of the affected tissue inflammation. Over the counter medications (aleve, advil) for a few days will ameliorate the pain their anti-inflammatory effect. If concerned? Call your dentist for post-op exploration.

Possibly: It is basically a surgery within a tooth and healing needs to occur. Be patient but call the dentist/endodontist if any concerns.
