Inflammation: The bone around your tooth is inflammed. The bone still has nerves in it, wheras your tooth does not.

Root canal hurts: The first thing your dentist needs to check is the bite. If the bite is off you will be sensitive to hot and cold and maybe have a dull ache or inflammation and bleeding around the gums. You be clenching or grinding at night that can make it worse. It also can be the roots are not perfectly clean (which can sometimes be difficult). Have your dentist take an x-ray to see if there is an abscess.
