i had a colonoscopy done and the doctor said i had gastritis, isnt that an ulcer? just wondered about if it was an ulcer but called it different?

Gastritis is vague: gastritis is different from ulcer. What medication did he start?- Inflammation of mucous membrane of stomach.

Change your diet by avoiding highly processed food,spicy food,chocolates,alcohol,acidic food,dairy &amp; high gluten food.

my colonoscopy showed sigmoid inflam and edema. doc left a message today and he had my biopsy results, that everything's fine, and to call back. couldn't reach him. can i take "fine" to mean "not ibd?

Fine is good : Obviously you need to have a conversation with the doc. "fine" probably means it's not inflammatory bowel disease. This has classic findings. You may have irritable bowel syndrome,  which is more of a diagnosis by exclusion, but "fine" means no obvious evidence of cancer or anything scary.

Colonoscopy: A gastroenterologist will perform a screening colonoscopy for appropriate patients.  Discuss  with your primary care physician to get a referral.  Most insurance plans cover a screening colonoscopy.

could my doctor diagnose celiac disease with a colonoscopy?

Accepted Answer

Probably not: Celiac disease can be diagnosed by small intestine biopsies, done through an endoscope through the mouth. Colonoscopy comes from the other end (the anus) and probably wouldn't be able to get a diagnostic biopsy of the small intestine.

is it common for doctors to find ulcers during a colonoscopy?

Accepted Answer

Not common, but...: When one performs a colonoscopy, common finds are things like polyps, diveritculosis (outpouchings of the colon wall), and unfortunately masses, which can be ulcerated.  

Sometimes, there are ulcers found associated with certain colon conditions, such as ulcerative colitis.  

It might be better to go back to your doctor and ask again what they meant when they told you they found an "ulcer".

Several options: Most GI docs use a narcotic and a benzodiazepine (often fentanyl or Demerol (meperidine hydrochloride) and versed) to relieve discomfort and anxiety as well as providing some amnesia. Propofol can also be used for deeper sedation but should be supervised by an anesthesiologist.

Need more info: Why was a colonoscopy done at age 21? What were your symptoms? Biopsies are not normally part of this procedure. However, at age 21 there were likely reasons to biopsy if colitis was suspected

if a biopsy is taken during a colonoscopy  will your doctor tell you? and will he tell you what the results were?

Yes: If your doctor takes a biopsy in the course of your colonoscopy, then he/she will definitely tell you that they did so. They should have those pathology results back to you within 6-7 days.  If you're worried, just call your doctor.

USUAL STEPS: You will be instructed to take a clear liquid diet and not to eat after the evening prior to the procedure. The most important part is to drink all the golitely which will cause diarrhea until stool completely clears and only water is what you see. Its very important to be clean so that minute polyps can be seen and removed and no lesion missed.
