i used to have to sleep 8 hours or more every night, but now i've gotten used to 5-6 hours a night.  is this normal or healthy? i'm 24 years old.

Sleep need: Sleep of 5--6 hours per 24 is a bit too short.  You are finished growing, so you may be ok sleeping less, but your wakefulness depends upon some extra hormone secretions, which have some tradeoffs for your body's health.  Optimal sleep is 7-8 hours.

QUALITY: Try for better quality of sleep.1. Maintain a regular bedtime and awakening time schedule including weekends. Get up about the same time every day, regardless of what time you fell asleep. 
2. Establish a regular, relaxing bedtime routine. Relaxing rituals prior to bedtime many include a warm bath or shower, aroma therapy, reading, or listening to soothing music.

6 to 8 hours: Most people will perform best and have the best health with 6 to 8 hours of sleep.  Your body will tell you what you need.  Eventhough some people do well with less than 6 hours others may need more than 8.  The quality of sleep is also important and if deep sleep is not achieved, 8 hours may not be enough.

Get on a routine : teenagers need more sleep. Try to get up and go to bed at a consistent time. Eat a balanced diet and watch caffeine and sports drinks.

Get a workup done: The diagnosis of fatigue is sometimes easy, sometimes elusive.  You should see your doctor and have some tests and an exam done.  In addition to a complete physical exam, a complete blood count, comprehensive metabolic profile, thyroid tests, and vitamin d level are a good start.  Also if you are male checking your testosterone level would be appropriate.  Also ask about sleep apnea.

A sleep disorder?: Getting what seems to be an adequate amount of sleep but still being tired is a sign of a problem. It could be a more general health issue, such as a vitamin deficiency or thyroid imbalance, or depression, or a sleep disorder such as sleep apnea or periodic limb movements of sleep. You should see your doctor and discuss this specific problem with him/her.
