Coverage: Most ordinary medical insurance does not include dental work. Braces are considered "cosmetic" dental work. Even regular dental insurance often does not cover that. I'd recommend you check with the orthodontist.

Same cost: The price of dental procedures will cost the same amout whether you have insurance or not as dentists are not allowed to have separate fees for the same procedure.  Talk to your dentist and get a second or third opinion, but the teeth should be straightened so the bite, muscles and upper quadrant function in harmony.

The : The patients that i see in my office usually have insurance through their employers, meaning they are covered by group rates, which are far less expensive than purchasing dental insurance on your own. Orthodontic coverage is a rider to the main coverage, meaning there might be an additional fee.

In addition, the orthodontic rider usually covers $ 1500 to $ 2500, lifetime max, and there are age limitations for that, too. Yearly maximum coverage on the usual plans run from $ 1000 per year to $3000 per year.

Insurance in many cases does not cover preexisting conditions, or cosmetic procedures. It is for this reason that purchasing individual insurance on your own may not make economic sense in the long run. Your best bet is to talk to a broker in your area to find out what is available to you and what the premiums are. You will be better informed as to what will work for you when you know your premium costs.

As : As with any medical or dental problem, it is almost impossible to determine the cost of treatment without a proper assessment of the problem.  For your problem the initial assessment will typically include a clinical examination with full charting of the condition of the gum and bone as well as xrays.  I recommend that you call several periodontists that your dentist recommends in your area and ask if they can provide you an estimate for those services.
