Primary HSV infections are usually mild, in fact, most are asymptomatic. 26% of US children have serologic evidence of HSV-1 infection by 7 years of age. More than 80% of the general population harbor HSV-1 in a latent form. HSV-1 infection in genital area can result from autoinoculation of virus from the mouth.

If you ever had a cold sore around the mouth, your HSV 1 is oral like it is in vast majority of people. More than half the adults have been infected with HSV 1. There is no cure. It may not be worth the trouble to sort out the location of the primary infection. Wish you good health!
