Get Treatment: Antibiotics help to control a dental infection but the pain will not resolve until the tooth is treated whether that is with a root canal or an extraction. It's good that you are on antibiotics but you need to have the tooth treated to eliminate the problem.

24-36 hrs: It can take up to 24-36 hours for the medicine to control the infection. If that antibiotics don't work in that time frame you may need a different type or if there is swelling then a course of IV antibiotics may be needed.
