Depends: Often, a front tooth single canal is performed in about 1 hour or less & a premolar or molar will take longer, because they have more canals(2, 3 or more) in these teeth to seal. Usually a root canal gets you "out of pain" but you may have some discomfort. Yes, root canal treated teeth are more brittle than non-treated teeth, so you may need a crown & will need to be careful eating on that tooth.

Everything varies: Generally there is no pain during the procedure & mild to moderate short term discomfort afterwards, although many patients have no pain after at all. Most, but not all teeth, require crowns afterwards as either the original decay or the access to the canals weakens the tooth somewhat. It generally take 1-2 visits and each tooth is different as well as how the dentist approaches the treatment.
