It's a slow: Progression from obesity to Insulin resistance to prediabetes to diabetes. It's not sudden changes and drop=offs, but all part of the same disease. For normal levels for each stage, see diabetes.Org.

Yes: Refined sugar examples are sweet candies, cakes, icing, and carbonated sodas. These sugars will raise Insulin levels quite high during digestion, and be more likely stored as fat if not quickly utilized for energy.

If I feely hypoglycemic, shouldn't I eat sugar to compensate?

Depends: Are you truly hypoglycemic and if so why? One may feel "hypoglycemic" after severe exercise or after a long period of fasting. You should consult a doctor to rule out any medical conditions as a cause of the hypoglycemia.

Glucometer: Get a glucometer and do a fingerstick. That way you will get a blood sugar reading at the time that you feel to be hypoglycemic.

Diagnosing diabetes: Diabetes is defined as a fasting blood sugar of 126 or higher on two different occasions. It can also be diagnosed by a glucose tolerance test or by a blood test called a hba1c. Go see your doctor.

A 35-year-old member asked:
I have a friend who eats plain sugar. Yes, the white, granulated kind. What are the health repercussions?

Dr. Albert Pizzoanswered

Sugar: It depends on the amount, what else is eaten and on the lifestyle of the person. In general everyone needs carbohydrates for normal metabolism. The worst kinds of carbohydrate are the sugars and the worst of sugars are the high fructose corn syrups found in so many foods. Eat a healthy diet with a proportion of complex carbohydrates e.g. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and berries.
