Fat containing herni: The hernia is most likely not the cause of your bowel problems. Umbilical hernias very rarely contain any bowel, mostly fat. They are not emergencies because no bowel is at risk, but can be fixed through surgery.

May not be: Sounds like your umbilical hernia does not contain bowel, but omentum (fatty apron of tissue overlying abdominal contents); can cause pain. Don't know your bowel problems, unlikely to be responsible.
