A member asked:

I have had some test done and they told me my stomach is not emptying into the small intestine correctly, can this be caused by a hernia. ?

Possibly: There are many reasons why your stomach may not be emptying correctly. A large hiatal hernia can certainly cause problems with your stomach properly emptying, however you should have a proper evaluation by a gastroenterologist.

No.: In many cases a direct cause is not identified, but the other causes are: diabetes, viral infection, medications, connective tissue disorders and other autoimmune diseases, prior surgery, neurodegenerative disease, psychiatric disease.

Maybe: This might happen if you had a large hiatal hernia. It sounds like you may have gastroparesis. This is a condition where the stomach doesn't empty into the small intestine. We don't have a great understanding of disease, and it is typically treated with diet modifications, medications, gastric stimulator, or removal of the stomach.
