You may need more : In periods of rapid growth, young people can often need up to twelve hours of sleep, but the obligations placed on teenagers in our society do not allow for that. Sleep deficits are cumulative, and different people can need more or less than the averages. If you feel tired, get sleep whenever you can. See your doctor about your blood iron level, thyroid, etc if this doesn't help.

Variable: Kids that are still growing or have heavy study schedules or both need a minimum of 9 hours. Extra activities like sports can add to the requirement. After growth stops and schedule lessens, most can get by on 8. Memory difficulty, diminished academic or athletic performance or drowsy periods during the day suggest the need for more sleep.
